Borgo del Duca is a new concept of scattered hospitality (albergo diffuso) born from the initial restoration and valorization of Palazzo Del Duca. This project began in 2015 and, over the course of about 10 years, has expanded to new properties situated along the slopes of the Matera Civita, connecting Via Muro and Via San Giacomo.
Just like in a small village, the 22 rooms are distributed alongside various services, including the hotel restaurant, the conference room, and the soon-to-open Spa. We invite you to discover this little corner of peace and authentic hospitality in the heart of the Sassi di Matera, where a complete range of services ensures a truly unique experience.
The noble palace belonging to the Malvini Malvezzi family, Dukes of Santa Candida—from which "Palazzo Del Duca" takes its name—gave birth to the entire project in 2017. The Palace stands on the panoramic Via Muro, a location that has become famous as a cinematic backdrop for the most important films shot in Matera, from Pasolini to Mel Gibson and the latest 007.
After a long period of abandonment, the renovation of the Palace allowed for the recovery of the site's history through the restoration of the first 10 rooms. These, divided into suites, junior suites, and classic rooms, are either carved into the tuff rock or built in external volumes with large vaults. The furnishings feature king-size beds with velvet headboards enriched by tufted detailing, and large crystal chandeliers that contrast with a sober and minimal decor, recalling the furnishings of the past made of wood, iron, and traditional materials.
The Palace houses the reception and the restaurant, representing the beating heart of the structure where everything began. Along the street, the Palace staircase is a popular photo spot, evoking the celebrated quote by the famous Italian poet Giovanni Pascoli, who lived in Matera for several years.
Born from a subsequent renovation started in 2023, these rooms are located along Via San Giacomo, just a few steps from the Palace, offering some of the most beautiful views of the Sassi and the Gravina canyon.
The rooms are the result of a major restoration involving the Spagnulo and Partners studio, adding further charm to the ancient complex nestled along Via San Giacomo, which opens with an imposing view over the heart of San Pietro Caveoso.
The creation of these new rooms has breathed life back into ancient dwellings, home for many years to Materan families who carefully and skillfully preserved and passed down the uniqueness of the site. Notable distinctive features include the original diamond-point rusticated balcony, one of the few present in Matera, and the original fresco on the wooden planking that characterizes one of the residence's rooms, as well as the votive fresco of San Giacomo in Monterrone, lost over the years and recovered by expert hands during the restoration. In addition to the rooms, the Residences house the "San Giacomo" conference room and a soon-to-open spa.
In the heart of the Materan Civita, just a few steps from the Matera Cathedral, the stables of the Noha family—the original owners of Palazzo Noha—stand within a large and spacious private courtyard.
Today, the Palace is divided between the spaces housing the rooms of Palazzo del Duca and the FAI Foundation museum, appropriately named Casa Noha.
These large and prestigious rooms, which evoke the grand salons and chambers belonging to the family, are a quiet and peaceful place waiting to be discovered. Ideal for comfortable long stays, the rooms are equipped with amenities for families and guests who do not want to sacrifice tranquility or a wide range of services. Among these, there is also an Apartment featuring a large living room and kitchen.
The works, overseen by the Spagnulo and Partners studio, are nearing completion and will create not only the guest rooms but also an important convivial space within the lamione, the centerpiece of the life that once characterized the stables of Palazzo Noha.
